Bach Flowers

Bach Flowers are natural remedies created by the British physician Edward Bach in the 1930s. These remedies are based on the idea that negative emotions can affect physical and mental health. Bach identified 38 flower essences, each associated with specific emotional states such as fear, anxiety, sadness or indecision. Bach's remedies are used to promote emotional balance and general well-being. They are often supplied in the form of drops and either taken directly or diluted in water.

How do you prepare a flower essence according to Dr. Bach's original method?

Bach Flowers are prepared using solarisation or the boiling method. The choice is determined by the flowering period of the various flowers and trees.

Now let's look in detail at the procedure for preparing a flower essence using the solarisation method.

  • Read on to find out what you will need:

pure fresh water, preferably from a free-flowing local spring; a thin glass bowl with no labels; good quality floral scissors; a dark glass bottle; brandy, preferably organic (or at least good quality); a funnel and some filter paper.

Preparation, dosage and intake of flower remedies

As regards instructions for the preparation and taking of flower remedies, it has been necessary to make some assumptions in order to detail the recommendations for each flower remedy as typically found in reference manuals. Below, we have indicated the relevant information required for the correct use of individual essences, composite mixtures, and all the formulations mentioned in the English edition of Bach Flowers and Healing Herbs.

Single essences

Preparation of an administration vial:

For Bach flowers and Californian flowers, proceed by placing 3/4 volume of natural water and then 1/4 of brandy (alcohol is necessary for preservation purposes) in a 30 ml bottle with a pipette dropper. Then add 3 drops of each chosen flower essence.

For children, and those who prefer not to drink alcohol, the brandy in the mixture can be replaced with apple cider vinegar. Alternatively, you can use just water alone, bearing in mind the mixture will then have a shorter shelf life of just 2 weeks - compared to the 4 weeks which can be anticipated with an alcohol solution.

It is recommended to use natural, still water because sparkling spa water cannot be considered a sufficiently neutral substance from an energy point of view.

Dosage

For English and Californian flowers, the classic dosage recommended for adults is 4 sublingual drops taken 4 times a day (first thing in the morning, early afternoon, late afternoon, and in the evening before going to bed).

For children, it is advisable to be guided by their initial reaction to taking the treatment - thus increasing, decreasing, or continuing the standard dosage accordingly.

Clarifications

The average duration of the treatment is 3-4 weeks but there are no specific rules. So it is possible to repeat the same combination, modify it a little, or change it completely.

When taking the Rescue Remedy formulation the recommended dosage is 4 drops in 30 ml of solution.

Treatment can be stopped at any time during the treatment period.

There is no decrease in response (no risk of habituation).

If the pipette touches the mucous membrane inside the mouth, the recommendation is to then rinse it under running water to avoid any bacterial contamination of the aqueous solution.

Always label the bottle, listing all the flower essences the solution contains and the date of preparation.

The standard dosage can be modified at your personal discretion. So, based on one's experience or sensitivity, the doses can be spontaneously increased or decreased during the day.

Combined essences and compound formulas

Mouth Spray: The recommended dosage is 1-2 sprays sprayed directly on the tongue as required (at least 2 times a day) and administered at any time of the day. The two most important times are upon waking up and just before falling asleep.
