Flower Therapy: Theoretical Principles and Vibrational Medicine

Flower therapy can be considered a therapeutic method and at the same time a philosophical and psychological concept that Bach set out in his short essays “Heal thyself” (1931), “Free thyself” (1933), and “Being thyself” (1934). These are collections of reflections, letters and conferences in which he explains and describes the fundamental principles of his theory and explains the properties of flower remedies.

Edward Bach did not consider illness an accidental, fortuitous and inevitable event, nor health and well-being as a case of blind or selective luck. According to his belief, illness can always be related to a state of psycho-emotional disharmony, with negative feelings and emotions, conflicts and painful states of mind, recent or long-standing, which cause suffering and discomfort. Suppressed and buried deep within our consciousness, these internal conflicts manifest themselves in the body as physical symptoms via a "symbolic language".

Illness should thus be considered a “signal” of our internal imbalance or spiritual malaise: we become sick when we stifle our creativity, when we fail to express our talents and potential, when we allow ourselves to be influenced and misled by others, when we lack confidence and self-belief, when we project our negative feelings onto others and fall prey to anger, hatred, resentment, envy, jealousy, intolerance, selfishness and cruelty.

But how do flower essences work?

Each of the plants and flowers identified by Bach has a very specific spiritual concept and an energy that “vibrates” at a certain frequency. Each of these frequency models in the botanical world corresponds to a frequency within the human energy field. Thus Bach's 38 flowers represent 38 spiritual potentials of the human soul, present in each of us as “virtues”, or symbolic models of harmonious behaviour, even though there may be individual differences.

Therefore, if a mismatch were to arise in a person between the intentions of their soul and the beliefs of their personality as regards a particular “virtue”, a distortion of the frequency of that person's potential would be created such that a negative reactive pattern would manifest itself in that person (first in their behaviour, and then over time at a physical level).

Thus, absorbing the frequency of the appropriate floral essence corresponding to the distorted “virtue” would send a harmonic impulse via that particular frequency range within the human energy field. Over time, this would promote a reharmonisation, potentially leading to the regression and subsequent disappearance of the negative reaction itself.

In summary: the flower essence reactivates the (blocked) contact between soul and personality so the flow of life returns to once more flow freely and spontaneously. The vibrational frequencies of the flowers help to free the person from distortions and human limits, recovering the connection with the absolute values of the spiritual "virtues" unique to mankind - virtues that give meaning and harmony to existence.

  • Can all 38 flowers be combined in one blend?

If this was a sensible practice, Bach would have used it and suggested it in his writings, since his primary goal was the well-being of as many people as possible in the shortest possible time. Furthermore, our energy system can only process a limited number of impulses at the same time. Experience shows that mixtures with more than 12 flowers lose any specific, targeted effect. If you feel the need to take all 38 essences together, you could perhaps consider taking the Rescue Remedy mixture for a few days and then seek further guidance from a flower therapy expert.

  • What happens if you take the “wrong” flowers?

Nothing happens. Where there is no disharmony, a flower will  not create a resonance, and thus will not act and will have no effect. Furthermore, existing disharmonious states are not influenced, positively or negatively, by unsuitable flowers. The field of interaction must be the same before any resonance can occur.

  • Can someone with allergies take Bach flowers?

The intake of flowers is guaranteed safe even for those who suffer from allergies. The preparation of floral concentrates does not involve the extraction of any potentially allergenic substances contained in the plant - just the flower's unique energetic content.

  • Is it possible to take an overdose?

This can be absolutely ruled out due to the mode of action flower remedies employ. This is a vibrational therapy that acts by virtue of the transmission of a specific energy impulse over time. Thus there is no correlation with the ponderal intake of a substance, and no dose/response reaction to control and verify.

  • Can the flowers be combined with other medicines or conventional allopathic therapies?

Yes, because traditional (allopathic) medicines act on the physical level with physiological and biochemical mechanisms, while flower remedies work on a different (energetic vibrational) level. Therefore the effectiveness of both is not influenced or compromised because there is no interference on the field of action, which is in itself entirely different.

  • Do Bach flowers have a placebo effect?

The "placebo effect" refers to the associated imputation a person feels when taking a product. Yet flower therapy has a positive effect, and therefore efficacy, on infants, children, animals and plants that certainly do not present with any expectations, preconceived attitudes or predilections. As with any treatment, an open and welcoming approach towards Bach Flower therapy is certainly positive. However, it is not essential to "believe" in the therapy for the intake of flowers to have an effect.

  • What does it mean when flowers act on a vibrational level?

Everything that exists is energy, visible or invisible depending on the intensity of its vibration. So humans and nature are immersed in a constant bioenergetic field. Based on this assumption, every organism in the universe is made up of energy (everything has its own measurable electromagnetic field, or rather bioenergy if it is a living being) and this energy can flow more or less uniformly. Illness, symptoms and mental discomfort can be the sign of an irregularity in the distribution of energy within the body. These blocks or flow anomalies must be treated by bringing the body's energy levels back to an optimal state, natural in its intensity, harmony and uniformity. Thanks to their vibrational essence, flowers can act to rebalance the energy centres of our physical-emotional body.

  • Can flowers fail to work?

Flowers always work if they have not been contaminated, and if they are intact from an energetic-vibrational qualitative point of view. However, if the person taking them does not perceive any evident effects, this means that an awareness of the existing disharmony - essential for self-healing - has not occurred. For this reason, it is always preferable to have the guidance and support of an expert in flower therapy with whom to consult.

  • Can flower remedies be taken by infants and children, pregnant women and animals?

Absolutely yes, in every case. They can be a real help for little ones with acute disorders as well as in chronic cases. They are safe because they have no side effects and are prepared without adding alcohol. For breast-fed newborns it is sufficient for the mother to take them, otherwise they can be added to the bottle, or if necessary used locally mixed with oils or creams and massaged into the skin. During pregnancy, emotional sensitivity is more subject to sudden changes, which is why flower remedies offer strong, welcome support to face this waiting period with serenity. Finally, animals can also enjoy the benefits of flower essences, especially in cases of trauma, acute mental disorders (phobias, aggression) and behavioural disorders, as well as in change situations that affect them directly or indirectly.

  • Is there an alternative to the use of brandy in the administration mixture?

Brandy in the mixtures functions as a preservative. You can use apple cider vinegar instead of brandy - or add nothing at all, while taking care to store the bottle in a cool place. Using water alone, the mixture can be expected to stay fresh for up to two weeks.

  • How many flowers can you put in the same mix?

There is no general rule that absolutely applies, because this is decided on a case-by-case basis. The indicative maximum number usually suggested is 7/8 flowers that all act in a broadly similar way. In other words, it is preferable to opt to face particular difficulties one at a time rather than all together. Experience has shown that too many flowers taken together are not as effective as a few targeted ones. This is because an excessive quantity of flowers will not have a better or more intense effect. On the contrary, our energy system is not designed to handle these simultaneous impulses.

  • Can taking flowers for a long time lead to addiction?

No, because they are not drugs, either by their nature or their mode of action. Flowers help to rebalance a disharmony. And as soon as that balance is restored the remedy no longer has any effect. Addiction is also excluded because flowers help us to resume the evolution of our personality and to gradually discover our inner resources. Even so, it is not recommended to take the same mixture of flower essences continuously.
